Overview of the department
The department of mathematics of Vivekananda College, Madhyamgram started in the year 2017 as a pass course subject and honours course started in 2018. We envision our students as excellent mathematician, not only in the field of science and technology, but also in good citizenship and discipline. Our commitment lies in producing comprehensive knowledge seekers and capable of building a strong and developed nation. The department aims to groom our young students to become professionally and morally sound mathematicians and to reach global standards in production and value based living through an honest and scientific approach.
To achieve the vision we should have diligent faculty who use effective teaching methodologies. Student should be able to know and demonstrate understanding of the concepts from various branches of mathematics. Also they can select and apply general rules correctly to solve problems including those in real life contexts. It allows students to experience the excitement and satisfaction of mathematical discovery. Students are given the opportunity to recognize and describe patterns as relationships or general rules to draw conclusions consistent with findings.
Mathematics provides a powerful and universal language. Students are expected to use different forms of mathematical representation like formulae, tables, diagrams, charts, graphs and models. Department of Mathematics encourages students to reflect upon their findings and problem solving processes. Students are encouraged to share their thinking with teachers and peers and to explain whether their results make sense in the context of the problem.
Many students of our college are working in different sectors. A little percentage of students have gone for higher studies in different universities of West Bengal. Most of the students of our college are preparing for competitive examination. Some of the students are doing some computer courses on Graphic Design Technology. In the session 2019-2022batch among the 7 honours students 2 of them holds 3rd& 10th position in West Bengal State University.
