About Department

The Department of Geography began its journey in the year 1995 with the introduction of General degree course (C/1095/251-Affl: dated 07.09.1995). In due course of time, Honours course in the discipline was introduced in 2002 (C/1511/251-Affl. dated 12/07/2002). Another feather in its cap was added with the introduction of Post Graduate course in Geography in the year 2017. This self-financing course is running successfully since then with affiliation from the parent University, West Bengal State University. The Annual system of evaluation was in vogue till 2017 in conformity with the UGC guidelines. However, the Choice Based Credit System was introduced in 2018. At present, the course is run in conformity with the newly introduced NEP guidelines as stated by UGC. The department currently offers Major, Minor, Skill Enhancement Course as well as Multi-Disciplinary Course at the Under Graduate level. The Department has four full-time and two SACT faculty members along with one laboratory attendant. The faculty members have published several papers in reputed journals and edited books. They have also presented papers in conferences and seminars at state, national and international levels. Besides, Guest teachers and distinguished scholars are invited to deliver lectures periodically in order to enrich our students. Special lectures and Invited talks by scholars, Power point presentation by our students, poster presentations and competitions by students etc. are regularly conducted by the department to broaden the horizons of our students. The department also conducts various outreach and extension programmes in collaboration with the NSS unit of the college. In the last few years many of our students have successfully qualified NET/SET Exams along with junior research fellowships. Some of them are pursuing their Doctoral research in various universities. The department has a well- equipped laboratory and a rich seminar library. We have two Smart Class rooms with well-equipped Computer lab with Wi-Fi connection. In future, the department plans to develop a separate cartography lab with advanced survey equipments. As the college is constructing a new building, the number of class rooms is likely to be enhanced. Facilities in RS and GIS Lab would also be augmented. The department also hopes to augment the ICT facilities for both teachers and students.
