About Department
Established in 1986, the Department of History has been a vital component of the college, initially offering the B.A Pass course. The Honours programme was introduced in 2002, and since then the department has maintained a strong academic record marked by consistent student success and progression.
The department follows a student-centric and dynamic teaching-learning approach. Pedagogical methods include lectures, interactive question answer sessions, group discussions, student seminars, and the use of ICT-enabled tools. In addition, the department organizes field visits to museums, historically significant sites, enabling students to engage directly with primary sources and material culture, thereby enriching experiential learning
The learning process is further supported by ICT resources, a well-stocked central library, and a dedicated departmental library with a rich collection of Bengali and English textbooks and reference books. Students are encouraged to participate in seminars, poster presentations, and project-based work, fostering analytical thinking, creativity, and research skills.
The faculty members are committed to guiding students in understanding the socio-political dimensions of history, linking past developments with contemporary realities. Graduates from the department regularly secure admission to Post-Graduate programmes at institutions such as WBSU, CU, and KU. Many also pursue professional courses like B.Ed. and D.El.Ed., along with preparation for competitive examinations.
The department actively organizes academic activities, including seminars and poster competitions. Notable initiatives including the International Seminar on “Peace and Conflict in South Asia: Challenges and Prospects” (2019), the student seminar on “Pandemic in History” (2022), and the poster competition on “Utility of Handicrafts in our Society” (2022), reflecting its commitment to academic excellence and holistic student development.
